The AB 101 Powerboat Certification Course gives you the skills, confidence, and safety knowledge to operate a recreational powerboat in light to moderate conditions. Through a mix of hands-on training and expert instruction, you’ll build a strong foundation for safe, independent boating.

Whether you’re brand new to boating or looking to solidify your basic skills, this course is designed to help you feel confident behind the wheel.

Who Should Take This Course?

Prerequisites

  • No prior boating experience is required.

  • Students must be 18 years or older.


Class Size

  • Maximum class size: 4 students

  • Minimum class size to run: 2 students


Pricing

  • Non-Member: Friday–Sunday – $1,595

  • Member: Friday–Sunday – $1,195

Tipping: Tipping your instructor is customary within the industry, typically ranging from 10% to 20% of the course fee, and is greatly appreciated!

Course Content

You will complete 24 hours of hands-on training aboard a twin-engine Sea Ray powerboat.
Throughout the AB 101 course, you will become proficient in:

  • Understanding Boat Types and Propulsion Systems
    Learn about different boat designs, hull shapes, and propulsion methods.

  • Navigation and Hazard Awareness
    Navigate safely while identifying potential hazards such as currents, changing weather, and restricted zones. Understand and apply local boating regulations.

  • Journey Preparation and Emergency Procedures
    Prepare for trips with thorough pre-departure checks and learn how to respond to emergencies on the water.

  • Docking, Mooring, and Safe Gear Management
    Practice essential techniques for docking, securing, and stabilizing your boat.

This course is designed to build the fundamental skills needed for safe and enjoyable recreational boating.


AB 101 Certification Standards

Upon successful completion, you will be certified to:

  • Confidently operate a recreational powerboat of appropriate size, managing speed, throttle, and steering with control.

  • Identify and use essential safety equipment according to USCG and local boating requirements.

  • Safely fuel, start, and shut down a twin-engine powerboat.

  • Navigate responsibly following nautical rules, while maintaining safe and courteous interaction with other vessels.
